What are Industry Standards?
Industry standards are organizational bodies that are setup with either manufactors and or developers of protocols. In order to keep things consistant various groups exist. It is very important that industry standards are set to make sure everyone is on the same page when developing or working on top of existing protocols and technology.
ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute) A non-profit organization whose mission is to produce the telecommunications standards that will be used in Europe and beyond. To see the website check ISO home page. (International Organization for Standardization)This organization is a worldwide federation of standard setting bodies from approximately 100 nations. There is one standard setting body from each country.
W3C (The Internet Engineering Task Force) This task force is a large open community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. Much of the work is handled via mailing lists and is grouped into several areas. Examples of these areas include routing, transport, security, troubleshooting, etc. The IETF holds meetings 3 times per year.
IANA(Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) This is the central coordinator for the assignment of unique parameter values for Internet protocols.
ANSI(American National Standards Institute) The American National Standards Institute has served in its capacity as administrator and coordinator of the United States private sector voluntary standardization system for more than 80 years. Founded in 1818 by 5 engineering societies and 3 government agencies, the insitute remains a private, nonprofit membership organization supported by a diverse group of private and public sector organizations.
EIA(Telecommunications Industry Association) The formal organization responsible for the standards of the telecommunications equipment that connects to the U.S. telecommunications network.
IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., helps advance global prosperity by promoting the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electrical and information technologies and ciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.
